# Wikinosh

A Semantic MediaWiki site of nutrition facts for more than 20,000 foods, with a Twitter bot and an offline app.

Wikinosh was a wiki of nutrition facts. Each food had a page with a nutrition label (serving size, calories, fat, sodium, carbohydrates, and protein) stored as Semantic MediaWiki properties, and foods were grouped into categories such as Baby Foods, Beverages, and Spices and Herbs. The Internet Archive first captured it in [December 2011](https://web.archive.org/web/20111205190345/http://wikinosh.com/wiki/Main_Page) with 13,753 food records; by [mid-2012](https://web.archive.org/web/20120630194132/http://wikinosh.com/wiki/Main_Page) it listed 21,550. In January 2013 [WikiApiary](https://web.archive.org/web/20130103025340/http://wikiapiary.com/wiki/Wikinosh) counted 20,433 articles and 981,167 property values on it.

In [Open Loop #2](https://www.thingelstad.com/projects/open-loop/2-what-am-i-editing-anyway/) in June 2012, I described the food wiki I had “kind of in alpha” and how turning on Wikimedia Commons let a page show a photo of a banana just by naming the file. In July 2013 I worked with Yaron Koren to put Wikinosh’s data into Koren’s Miga app for offline, mobile access, and wrote up the Semantic MediaWiki limits I hit exporting more than 20,000 items ([Paging Large Datasets in Semantic MediaWiki](https://www.thingelstad.com/2013/07/30/paging-large-datasets.html)).

The @Wikinosh Twitter account posted a random food from its 28,000-plus entries every six hours; in November 2013 one of those posts, about trout, drew an IRC-style trout slap from another bot ([Slapped with a Large Trout](https://www.thingelstad.com/2013/11/04/slapped-with-a.html)). The last Internet Archive capture of the wiki is from April 2014, and by November 2014 I listed @Wikinosh among the Twitter accounts I had deleted ([Twitter Spam #NFL](https://www.thingelstad.com/2014/11/28/twitter-spam-nfl.html)).
