I had a website before I had a blog. I count June 2, 2004 as the blog’s official start, the date of its first post, and the archive also holds posts dated as far back as 2000 that I added to it later. I found I enjoyed writing in public: telling stories about my life and sharing the projects I was working on. The habit has lasted more than 20 years and over 10,000 posts. The blog is personal and noncommercial.

The blog has moved platforms several times. It started on .Text, a Windows .NET blogging package, and moved to WordPress in 2006. Apart from a brief move to Pelican in March 2014, it stayed on WordPress until April 2016, when I moved it to Squarespace, and then to Jekyll, hosted first on GitHub Pages and then on Netlify. I began using Micro.blog in April 2017. In May 2020 I imported the whole Jekyll site into it, more than 1,600 posts and 800MB of images, and Micro.blog has been the blog’s home ever since.

Over the years the writing grew from mostly longer articles to include short updates and, more and more, photographs, as phones made posting easier. My blog posts from each week are also republished in the Weekly Thing.

The build

  • The blog has run on .Text, WordPress, Pelican, Squarespace, Jekyll, and Micro.blog.
  • Micro.blog is the current publishing authority. Thing Hugo is the theme I am building for it.
  • Longer writing, shorter updates, and photographs share one personal archive.
  • Weekly Thing republishes blog posts as part of the newsletter.
